Overview of Facilities and Services

The primary WVU facility for maintaining animals for biomedical research, training and teaching is located at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center (HSC). Designed to provide centralized procurement and care of animals, this facility consists of approximately 25,000 square feet of animal holding and support space.

 

Other vivaria are located at the Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute (RNI), the Life Sciences Building (LSB) and the Food Animal Research Facility (FARF). These vivaria can support a number of species depending on investigator needs.

 

Multiple surgical suites fully equipped for major survival surgeries are available, as are additional procedure and special support units.

The Office of Laboratory Animal Resources personnel provide husbandry and veterinary care of animals, research and teaching support and investigator training.
